Using dark gray or black paint for your shed is a great choice for many back yard designs. Kristine Barnett combined dark paint and black aluminum windows for a modern flair on her She Shed Living shed.
Landscape designer Kristine Barnett had a private corner in the back yard that needed something substantial for a focal point. At the same time, she was wondering how to get some extra space for a home office that didn’t push the limits of her house. She contacted us and the plan for a 10 x 12 she shed began to take shape.
Design Tricks for a Well-Balanced Shed
Using the tenets of bold contrast, Kristine decided immediately to use a very dark gray/black to paint the exterior. Since her house is mostly white, Kristine’s shed provides balance yet also draws attention to itself. Inside the shed, Kristine added smooth pine siding and kept the finish natural.
The large backyard had many luxurious features and key zones for plants, herbs, outdoor dining, cooking and swimming, to name a few. Their decision to put the shed in a secret garden spot worked out beautifully, it was tucked in the back of the yard in the corner facing her lovely white home with black trim.
The front porch is just big enough to give it a welcoming entrance, the pots and welcome mat adorn the shed so well. The neutral colors work well with the black shed. Vertical elements like the ladder bring the eye up and is a good use of space for the blankets to be stored and on display.
Kristine’s beautiful and functional new space is the result of an effective partnership between shed designers and her own talents as a landscape designer. Kristine is ready for summer with her outdoor space to enjoy lots of summer entertaining thanks to the improvements in their backyard.
