Getting a small place of your own is important and anyone can do it! We have three approaches you can consider and all of them hold happy possibilities for your future peace of mind and creativity.
She sheds are usually structures that are separate from your home but the she shed style can be brought about in other ways, too. Ahead you’ll find three exciting ways to achieve your dream, depending on your budget, living circumstances and preferences.
Approach #1: Create a She Shed Ambiance
Possessing a cozy, private space for yourself is important. But it is not always possible to do that with a brand new structure apart from your home. You might live in a small place, or have a big family, or no backyard. You also may not have extra funds available for the construction costs of a she shed.
Here is what you can do:
Indoors — Consider corners, pockets, even large closets within your home for potential. Often you’ll find areas that are rarely used and if you’re lucky, a spare wall or alcove will be next to a pretty window letting in natural light.
Outdoors — Go outside and determine if your back porch or that old swing-set play area might be a good place to start. Perhaps you can erect a canopy or a simple pergola to create the feel of a she shed that is open air. Arrange seating and a pretty table, lay down an indoor/outdoor area rug and hang “windows” and/or a chandelier for effect.
Approach #2: Design a Shed and Do it Yourself
This approach is for a woman who has the space, the means and the desire to build a tiny structure in the backyard that is exclusively hers. To build it, you can do it yourself or find someone who can do it for you.
We all know that hiring a builder/contractor that is right for the job is not always a slam-dunk process. Often the best way to find one is through a referral from someone you trust. We have lots of advice about the search, the questions to ask and how to make sure you get the design you want.
You can also purchase a pre-made shed from a company (they will often install it for you, on a level surface you have prepared in advance) and know that you will want to invest in some special touches like a French door and additional windows. Make sure the structure can accommodate modifications and is sturdily built. We have lots of exciting ways to add flair and unique decorative fixtures and touches. Although we create and install sheds only in Southern California, we have been helping women throughout the United States get the start they need. For example, a woman in Maryland needed some help determining where to put her shed and didn’t have any ideas on who could build it for her. Our consultation package contained a site map, interior space plan and a list of builders, shed makers and kit suppliers for her to consider.
Approach #3: Let Us Help You in Southern California
If you’re ready for a she shed and live in Southern California, consider working with a full-service design/build/install team. The advantage you get with she shed experts (like us) is experience and hands-on service. One recent client had trouble with two or three contractors who had to leave the shed project because something larger came up. She was relieved to find us and we were able to help solve some tricky space problems she had in her backyard.
Our first step is paying you a visit and discussing what you want to use your shed for, your design aesthetic, your budget considerations and your timeline. You may be fortunate and already have a contractor who has worked with you on your home and can add a she shed build to the schedule. That’s great too, but don’t forget to come here or email us with any questions about shed design.
The bottom line is we want women to be able to enjoy their “me” time in a beautifully appointed space. Whether it’s in the house, on the porch, or in a she shed, private time is worth the effort. We are happy to help!
