Happy St. Patrick’s Day! It’s the time when rivers in Chicago turn bright green and strangers try to pinch you if you’re not wearing green. Green, green, green.
This past weekend I was out at our Murrieta shedquarters admiring how deep emerald our lawn was after Southern California’s heavy rains.
It got me thinking. In this age of drought-tolerant landscaping, how can we still enjoy the wonderful sensation of plush, green lawn? Lawns remind me of being small and running through the sprinkler. I can remember the pungent grassy fragrance, how blades of it stuck to my little feet, how cozy I felt lying in its rich, scratchy softness.
You can do a lot with a little where grass is concerned. The days of unending lawns are over and frankly, that’s not a bad thing. You want a garden, not a putting green!
Here are some ways to keep the lush green of lawn in your landscape or your life. You can find all of these in the wonderland called Pinterest!
Pavers and Grass
Even when green grass is reduced by 50% or more of ground space, it still satisfies the eye and appears dominant (in a good way). One popular design is a checkerboard pattern with large pavers; but you can use a number of different patterns depending on the hardscape materials you use.
This wonderful cottage path creates a different feel with irregular and rounded pavers.
Green Tree Bench
If you’re lucky enough to have a mature tree like this in your back yard, then you ought to consider a wraparound tree bench. This ingenious bench, featured in the Telegraph and designed by Dominic Watts and his wife Lucy Redman, is made with lightweight steel bands woven together to hold a pile of soil. It is topped with turf. (Photo by Martin Pope)
Stairs of Grass
Another great feature to highlight with the green is stairways. It’s an easy project – use strips of sod cut to fit across the tops of each step. Pair your turf with stone bricks or rot-resistant redwood 4 x 4s.
Reverse Pathway
Usually you see pathways of gravel cutting through the grass. Now reverse that idea to make a beautiful strip of green through wildflowers, formal gardens or even gravel. Grass is very kind to the feet and gives the entire space a feeling of refreshment, even if you live in a dry area like California.
